I selected this hull pic as the first for you to see because in addition to being beautiful, the hull image eerily resembles the actual environment where the boat was moored for the season. In the hull photo above you can see the shape of the island in the background, water in the foreground and marsh in the front. The pic shown below is a photo of the actual island, not the hull pic. Although the top photo is my boat’s hull, the photo looks exactly like the area where my boat was moored during the season, Washburn Island in Falmouth MA. If you were on my boat, the island, especially in a mist or fog, would look exactly like this hull photo. Washburn Island is approximately one and a half miles long and a half mile wide. This boat hull photo was taken at one of Falmouth’s most beautiful ponds, coincidentally named Green Pond. I was on my boat when I saw the beautiful green patterns of the rippling water defining the emerald hull of this sailboat as it floated on its mooring. In the background you see the hull with its green and brown horizontal stain looking as majestic and real as the pond itself. If you were on Green Pond around sunset you could look Southwest and see this same colors reflected in the sky and sunset. If you are lucky enough to be on Green Pond simply look south and you will see Martha’s Vineyard Island, only five miles away.

What do you see? Let me know. Here is another example where hull stains magically reflect the visual properties of the boat’s location. It is as if the boat took a picture of its horizon and painted it on its own hull.

There is so much to see in this photo. I was transfixed by this hull as it sat perched on a trailer. What drew me in were the golden cliffs or dunes along the far end of the beach. Then I noticed the amazing surf, perfect endless waves! The foreground, abstract and unexplainable adds balance to the colors of the sky. What a beautiful display, all on a weathered, stained boat hull. How did it look like such a complex and majestic seascape?

Drama ensued as I walked my dog Tucker past my neighbor’s driveway. My neighbor’s boat sat upon it’s trailer and Don (my neighbor) was holding his power-washer like a soldier on patrol. He couldn’t wait to wash the stains, dirt and debris from his stained, mucky boat. All I could see were beautiful breaking waves and Don was about to wipe out the image. To me, it was like he was destroying nature, pouring concrete on flowers, kicking puppies. I rushed over and asked if he would let me take a picture of his hull before he power-washed it away. “You are nuts,” said my neighbor Don. “You want to take a picture of that dirt? Step back!”, he said, as I reached for my IPhone camera and Don aimed his nozzle toward my back. I dropped to my knees and stole this picture of his hull. “I’m in a hurry,” he said “I didn’t know I had nutty neighbors”

Tom never got to appreciate how beautiful his boat hull had become. He hadn’t the time nor the desire to step outside his usual way of thinking, his paradigm was fixed.

Can we allow ourselves to step back from our view of the world? There is so much to see and so much we will miss along the way.

The wind started to pick up from the north creating small waves as light chop dominated our river. I was in my kayak paddling against the out-bound tide as the wind and the current conspired to push me downriver toward Martha’s Vineyard Island. That’s when I spotted the hull pictured in this photo. I noticed the afternoon light flickering off it’s fiberglass hull. I had to get a picture.

This impressionistic photo reminds me of springtime in the desert, a field of poppies, and New Mexico. I love the restful, meditative quality of this photo as blue explodes in full bloom.

There is so much to see or imagine in this photo. I enjoy pretending I am at altitude in a small plane with the river below snaking for miles across the landscape surrounded by an ice field.

My favorite parts of this photo include the intensity of the light, a beautiful reflection of sun backlighting the the perfect wave. A closer look at the white breaking waves against a beautiful horizon makes it hard to believe you are looking at a boat hull. Photos like this brings me back to my central question, How can this be? An artist looked carefully at this piece during a recent art show and commented that my brush strokes were perfect. He said they were the best brush strokes he had ever seen. I explained it was a photo and not a painting. He was speechless, unable to accept the fact it was a photo and not a painting. . He said he couldn’t believe it was not a painting.

This small skiff was left for the season, tied to the shore in the salt marsh by my house. It was left in the tidal zone and subjected to changing tides twice daily. At low tide it rested in the marsh grass. The result- this amazing imagery. There are more than one hundred sections of this hull, each formed a beautiful mosaic pattern that looks like this, but they are all different and beautiful. I selected this photo because it makes me think of a primitive scene with a large bird or butterfly flying over a small pond or river among the many complex, beautiful images. This photo makes a beautiful set with some of the other images from this boat hull. Happy to send them if you are interested. I have this one framed in my kitchen and was on display at the Falmouth Arts Center “Waterlines” exhibition.

I love the blue colors in this HullScape and love mountains. i have hiked, biked, and rafted many times through the Grand Canyon. I love the imagery of this hull and think of mountains rising from a lake. I also travelled to Alaska and alternatively think of this photo as an iceberg. The beauty of HullScapes is they can represent so many different images.

I would love to know what you think. I would love to bring these photos to a classroom and see what kids see and what stories they might create about these images.

It’s not often I find such bright and bold red/orange color in a hull. It was the red color that caused me to jam on my car brakes when I spotted this hull on a trailer. (My wife is becoming annoyed with my sudden hull stops) It paid off. When I got close to this hull with my camera I saw a beautiful sandy beach. The beach was outstanding. Then I noticed a silver sliver at the top of the photo, the moon beautiful and perfect.

My neighbor Susan inherited an old Grady White fishing boat from her brother. It was deemed unseaworthy so it sat on a trailer in her driveway. Susan hoped it would somehow disappear among the tall weeds that grew around it. It’s hull, however, had character acquired through the ages. The cracks in the hull looked like an ancient wall to me.I noticed the top of the wall had amazing depth, the cracks in the blocks looking like Egypt meets the Grand Canyon.

Some folks describe people on top of the wall, others see plains, or deserts. It’s an amazing hull to spend some time with. If you travel beyond the wall, better leave some bread crumbs.

Winter has near over but it was not yet spring when the flapping sound of a tarp caught my attention. My dog Tucker hear it first. It stopped him and his tail went down. We both looked over at once and there was the tap on my fi riend Bruce’s boat flapping in the wind. Fortunately, for Tucker and I the flappiHullscape for sure. g tarp also displayed the boat’s hull.

It was mgnificait was a nt. High seas, ocean spray, rough surf, breaking waves, foam, and amazing light.
